Holiday Madness!!

Snow has settled on the valley floors. Halloween has come and gone and Thanksgiving is nearly upon us. The holiday season is ready to start, and what does that mean? Why family pictures, of course!

We have been running around like photographers with our heads cut off lately, which is a good thing for everything except the blog. That gets neglected. Oh, ok, and yes, my laundry pile. It gets neglected too. (But I am always looking for excuses to neglect that, so....)

In an act of contrition for having neglected the blog so much, I was thinking of answering a couple questions we get asked a lot.

One of the questions we get asked all the time is "What do you need to learn photography?" Well, the answer varies for lots of people, but to start with a serious study of learning to read the light and expose properly, etc., you will need an SLR camera. That is different than a point and shoot, in that YOU will be able to take control of all of the aspects of your camera. You'll be able to take it off of Automatic mode.

What's wrong with automatic? Nothing, for family snapshots! It's great. But when you're looking to create art, you'll find it is a lot easier to do if you're in the driver's seat and the camera is not the one calling all the shots.

Great, so you have an SLR, what now? The kit lens it came with is ok, especially if you're keeping it on auto, but once you decide to start taking control and working your way towards full manual control of your camera, you'll probably want to get a new lens.

But hold on to your hats. When you go lens shopping, you might die of sticker shock. Lens prices are...well, the are not cheap. Some of our favorite lenses are over $1K each. But don't let that discourage you. Because there is a hidden gem for beginners out there. It is the 50 mm 1.8 prime lens. This little beauty is about $100 and it has a fixed aperture and can open to a relatively wide 1.8. Now if you're just starting out, that might not mean much, but trust me...it is important.

And finally a gray card. Actually 2. An 18% gray card to learn exposure and a White Balance gray card, for learning to get correct color.

There are all kind of other goodies out there like flashes, zoom lenses, wireless triggers, strobes, backdrops...we could go on and on...but these 3 items are some of the most important things you need to really get going on photography.
